“I find collecting as a way to connect more to people, to inspire them, and be inspired as well.”
“I really don't have any idea!” says Tintin Johnson, when asked how she became a group admin of Pop Til You Drop (PTYD). It’s a surprising statement from Tintin, who’s become known in the Funko community for her always fun and feisty personality, entertaining content, and all-around willingness to help collectors in need of advice. “Sa totoo lang, nakakabigla na admin ako nito kasi ang admin super tagal na member dapat. Ako, almost 2 years, then kinuha na nila akong admin. Hindi ko po talaga alam!”
Tintin may not know how she got selected, but it’s not hard to see why: she can often be found hard at work, helping to build the community ties that make collecting so fun. “It is really fun to serve the group,” she says, and it shows: at any given time, she can be found hosting raffles, putting up livestreams, leading fire sales, or just all-around engaging with members of different Funko groups. But what makes it worthwhile for Tintin? “BAYANIHAN. That’s my favorite thing - You can see that everyone is willing to help those members who are really in need.”
Amazingly, Tintin didn’t actually start out as a Funko Pop collector! It was two years after spotting the distinctive vinyl figures in a hobby store that she decided that a Funko Captain America would make a good addition to her collection devoted to the character so memorably played by Chris Evans. “Nirequest ko siya as exchange gift, kaya first Pop ko siya,” says Tintin. “Fave ko siya kasi I felt the sincerity of his character in the movie…(I’m) not a fan of superheroes, pero nung napanuod ko si Cap, na-inlove na ako sa MCU.”
Soon, Tin's Cap was joined by his fellow Avengers, including Thor, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and even some X-Men! From there, she expanded to include lines as varied as Harry Potter, Disney, Star Wars, and Naruto – even childhood favorites like Scooby-Doo, Garfield and Rugrats have found a home in her collection.
If there’s something that Tin misses, it’s the gatherings that PTYD would organize, such as the annual Christmas party, complete with games, member awards, and a raffle. These events, which Tin hopes to be able to organize again in the future, allow members to meet each other and interact in person, many for the first time. Looking at the photos, it’s wonderful to see how happy everybody is to be sharing their love of collecting.
For Tin, sharing and connecting with people is why she does what she does. “It is very important to me because I find collecting as a way to connect more to people, to inspire them, and be inspired as well.” When asked what the mission of PTYD is, she answered: “Simple lang po. Maging tahanan nila (collectors) sa pag-co-collect ng Funko. Hindi lang kami group, they can consider us their HOME”
